Regarding authority, the school board is representing the community; however, they are the top of the pyramid and should not be making decisions on the education of individual students. Authority should follow a path from parents first to teachers to administration and finally to the school board.
The first role is to create and manage policy. This is inclusive of updating old policy to be relevant to today. I have a strong belief that policy should always have clear intent and always be in the best interest of children, teachers, and Williamson County families.
The school board hires and manages the superintendent. This includes setting benchmarks and evaluating performance based on those benchmarks. The board is also to ensure that the superintendent is implementing policy they have created.
The school board should be a voice for the community and listen and give fair consideration to the opinions of all constituents; not just the loudest. A good school board member should also be a communicator for the community letting them know when impactful policy is being considered or changed. This is a step further than transparency in that you are not only making sure everything is available to the public but being active in letting the public know when there is something important going on
